Shelby Wu July 4, 2026
This Fourth of July is going to feel different. On Saturday, July 4, 2026, the United States turns 250 years old (that's the Semiquincentennial, if you want to impress someone at the pancake breakfast), and communities all over the country are planning celebrations big enough to match. One of the sweetest examples is happening in Irvine, California, where the Woodbridge Village Association is folding its own big anniversary into the nation's.
Woodbridge was founded back in 1976, which means it's turning 50 this year, the exact same year America turns 250. That's too good a coincidence to pass up, so WVA has expanded its usual Independence Day tradition into something they're calling "A Golden Fourth," a full day of events built around both milestones.
The day kicks off early with the Ralph J. Redington 5K/10K and Kids Run, followed by a community pancake breakfast sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Irvine. Mid-morning brings the "Wheels on Parade, A Golden Anniversary Ride" along Barranca Parkway, with original Woodbridge homeowners and neighborhood floats joining in. Then the afternoon fills up fast with a carnival, boat races, beach-chair BINGO, and a red, white, and blue volleyball tournament down at South Lake Beach Club.
The real showstopper comes after dark. At 9:00 PM, Woodbridge is debuting its first-ever drone show, with formations soaring about 400 feet in the air, followed right after by a fireworks display honoring "50 Years of Community, 250 Years of Freedom." Even the neighborhood's North and South Lake bridges are joining the party, lit up in red, white, and blue every evening from mid-June all the way through the Fourth.
And it's genuinely a community effort. Residents are sending in old photos and memories, competing in a brand-new Neighborhood Challenge for the best patriotic block decorations, and volunteering to line the Yale Loop with American flags.
Woodbridge isn't the only place in Orange County going all out this year. If you want to hop around or just see what your neighbors are up to, here are a few other local celebrations worth knowing about:
Huntington Beach is hosting what it calls the largest Independence Day celebration west of the Mississippi, starting with the Surf City 5K at 7 a.m., a parade at 10 a.m., a pier plaza festival and carnival from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and fireworks over the ocean at 9 p.m.
Anaheim Hills kicks things off at Canyon High School with a Firecracker Run 5K/10K at 7 a.m., a dog show at 9 a.m., and a parade at 1 p.m., then shifts to Peralta Canyon Park for food and live entertainment before fireworks at 9 p.m.
Mission Viejo throws one of South OC's biggest free celebrations, a street faire on Olympiad Road from noon to 9 p.m. with rides, food trucks, and live entertainment, capped off with fireworks at 9 p.m.
Dana Point keeps it classic with a WWII-era aircraft flyover around 5:50 p.m. followed by fireworks launched from a barge off Doheny State Beach at 9 p.m.
Rancho Santa Margarita spends the whole day around Lago Santa Margarita, with a bike and trike parade at 10 a.m., beach club activities, and fireworks over the lake at 9 p.m.
Irvine also has its own Pacific Symphony July 4th Spectacular at Great Park Live, featuring Air Supply and a fireworks finale (ticketed).
Beyond Orange County, the whole country has been marking its 250th with events large and small, and Independence Day is shaping up to be the biggest moment of the whole year.
The biggest single celebration is happening in Washington, DC. The "Salute to America 250" on the National Mall is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of people for a full day of concerts, military flyovers, and aerobatic demonstrations, all leading up to what organizers are calling the largest fireworks display in history: about 850,000 shells launched from ten sites along the Potomac, including the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and eight river barges.
A couple of other places going big nationally:
New York Harbor is hosting Sail250, the seventh International Fleet Review, bringing together around 60 ships from 30 countries. It's expected to be the largest maritime gathering in U.S. history.
Chicago is promising its biggest and longest fireworks show ever at Navy Pier, a full 15 minutes lighting up the lakefront.
What makes Woodbridge's celebration stand out isn't how it compares to Huntington Beach or Washington in size. It's the way one neighborhood managed to weave its own 50 year story into the country's 250 year one. Whether you're watching drones trace an eagle over South Lake or fireworks light up the National Mall, this Fourth of July is a good reminder that America's story is really just thousands of local ones, all happening on the same night.
